1992 - Cold Spring Coffee Roasters
Our story started in 1992 as Cold Spring Coffee Roasters.
Owner Paul Lovegreen grew up in Woodford, VT and found himself missing the mountains and natural beauty of the area. Looking for a change, he moved to the northern Berkshires and opened Cold Spring Coffee Roasters in downtown Williamstown, MA.
-
2004 - Cold Spring became Tunnel city Coffee
In 2004, Cold Spring Coffee Roasters became Tunnel City Coffee to reflect the nickname of neighboring city, North Adams, MA—home of the historic Hoosac Tunnel.
The nearly five mile long tunnel connected the northern Berkshires to the urban hub of Boston and points west at its completion in 1874. Construction of the tunnel lasted over two decades, with no shortage of setbacks in between.
The Number 50 train passed through the Hoosac Tunnel in 1875, marking the start of new opportunity for small businesses and manufacturers in the region. Our espresso blend, Number 50, is inspired by the role of the tunnel in making success in the northern Berkshires possible.

2024 - A new chapter begins
Tunnel City was acquired by the Stockton and Patel families who are part of the Williamstown community.
We now operate our coffee roastery in the renovated and historic Norad Mill of North Adams alongside businesses of all kinds. We see the value of where we live in every small business owner who relocates here and the growing number of visitors who come to stay each year. Our mill towns are seeing a new era and we are excited to be part of their story.
